History of Kolkata Airport: Initially,
Kolkata Airport was known as
Dum Dum Airport. The airport initiated its operations in the year 1924. The Year 1975 witnessed the Cargo terminal of the airport being commissioned. It was in the year 1995 when the domestic terminal of the airport was launched. The airport was renamed as Netaji Subhash Chandra in the honor of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, the great Bengali Indian freedom fighter.
The Airport Structure looks complete with the presence of three terminals: domestic terminal, an international terminal and a cargo terminal. There are two parallel runways, out of which the longer one is used for take-offs and landings and the other one is a taxiway and also is used for daytime aircraft landing.
Kolkata Airport has recently witnessed a growth in traffic. This is mainly attributed to the modernization of the airport that took place in the past three to four years.
