Guwahati was the capital
of the north-eastern state of Assam. It is now the biggest
city of the state, and strategically acts as the gate
way to the north-east from the rest of India. An ancient
city, the place has been referred in the Puranas. However,
after a severe earthquake in 1897, the old city got destroyed.
The Kamakhya Mandir here is one of the major centers of
Tantra religious rituals, with Ambubachi Mela happening
in the months of June.

rates. As Guwahati is close to the Kaziranga wildlife
sanctuary, the hotels here see a constant flow of tourists.
