However, after the disintegration of the USSR, Aeroflot was converted from a state-run enterprise to a semi-privatized airline which ranks amongst the most cost-effective in the world.
Aeroflot is still considered the de facto national airline of Russia. The airline has undergone widespread route reformation; fleet transformation program and image revamp and joined the Sky Team in 2006, in order to meet the world standards.

Aeroflot also carried out other functions, including aeromedical, crop-dusting, heavy lifting for the Soviet Space Agency, offshore oil platform support, exploration for natural resources, support for construction projects, transport of military troops and supplies, atmospheric research, and remote area patrol. includes Airbus A319-100, Airbus A320-200, Airbus A321-200, Airbus A330-200, Airbus A330-300, Airbus A350-800XWB, Airbus A350-900XWB, Boeing 767-300ER, Boeing 787-8, Ilyushin Il-96-300 and Sukhoi Superjet 100-95. The Tupolev fleet is the oldest among the aircraft in the airline.

They offer business and economy flight tickets for passengers. In 1993, Aeroflot began its operation of New York route.
