Kenya Airways was set up in February 1977, following the disintegration of the erstwhile East African Community and successive disbanding of the jointly-owned East African Airways. In the beginning, the airline was completely owned by the Kenyan Government. In 1986, Kenyan Government started moves to privatize Kenya Airways, with a view to promote financial development and growth of country. It was assumed that the airline would do better, if it were privatized. In 1991, further moves were made to privatize the airline.
