VARIG Airlines

VARIG Airlines is the abbreviated form of Viacao Aerea RIo Grandense Airlines. It is actually a Brazilian airline situated at Sao Paulo. It had been the chief airline offering air travel in Brazil for a long period of time, spanning 1960’s to mid-2000s. Gol Linhas Aéreas Inteligentes owned the airline. A new company, named as VRG Linhas Aereas was created to control the airline, after its attainment.

However, the airline carries on operating under the name of VARIG. It has a fleet of 20 aircrafts presently, which include Boeing 737-700, Boeing 737-800 and Boeing 767-300ER.

VARIG Airlines was set up on May 7, 1927, at the Porto Alegre Commercial Association meeting, as the first Brazilian airline. The airline became operational on 15 July 1927, when its opening flight plied from Porto Alegre to Rio Grande, stopping over in Pelotas. Cruzeiro do Sul, one of the oldest airlines of Brazil and VARIG completely merged together in January 1933. The airline was working at the local level, in Southern Brazil. It plied its first international flight on 5th August 1942, to Montevideo. It became the largest airline in South America after taking over the Real Transportes Aereos consortium in 1961.

VARIG Airlines Fleet:
The airline maintains a fleet which includes Airbus A300-600R, Boeing 737-700, Boeing 737-800, Boeing 747-400, Boeing 757-200, Boeing 767-300ER, Boeing 777-200ER, Fokker 50, McDonnell Douglas DC-10-30ER and  McDonnell Douglas MD-11.

VARIG Airlines Destinations:
VARIG Airlines covers many domestic destinations, which are Brasilia, Manaus, Salvador, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Belo Horizonte, Sao Paulo and Southern Brazil. The international destinations that it connects to are Colombia, Venezuela, Argentina and Chile in South America. It no longer serves Japan, Europe, U.S and many other foreign destinations. It might start plying flights to many international destinations again, in the near future, including India.
